What is the task?
You will be given a passage, on the basis of which your comprehension skills will be tested in different ways – one of these ways is through labeling a diagram. Key information from the passage will be diagrammatically represented in the question paper. Its various parts will be numbered, and each number leads to a fill-in-the-blank question. The blanks must be filled using no more than three words from the given passage – each answer must correctly describe that particular part of the diagram.
The purpose of the task is to test your ability to comprehend information written in English in such a way that you can make connections between the written matter and the pictorial representation of the same.
Tips and Techniques
The first step in accomplishing this task must be to read the passage carefully. Once you have finished reading, take a close look at the diagram as well as the accompanying fill-in-the-blank questions. Try to match what you already read, with what you now see in the picture.
Keeping the diagram and the questions in your mind, go through the passage once again. Keep a lookout for those words or phrases (no more than three words!) that can be used to fill the blanks – or rather, that perfectly describe what you saw in the diagram.
An important skill that is associated with this task is your vocabulary – if your vocabulary is strong, you will recognize the meanings of the words in the passage and you will know what the object that the word is describing looks like – in this way, you will make the match between the words and the diagram easily! Thus, to prepare for this task, building your vocabulary is of prime importance.
